The Grand Egyptian Museum will close to visitors on Wednesday 2 September 2026. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, confirmed the date to Al-Masry Al-Youm. Egypt Independent carried the English version on 19 August. The Egyptian Travel Agents Association has already told tour companies to keep that Wednesday out of itineraries. Ghoneim said the reason will be announced later.

Grand Hall and galleries inside the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza

Two facts matter if you are in Giza that week. The closure is one day, not an indefinite shutdown. And it is the museum complex, not the Giza pyramids plateau next door. You can still go to the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the panoramic viewpoints on 2 September. You cannot walk the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Grand Stairs, or Khufu's Boats Museum that day.

Egypt Today, repeating the ETAA notice, was explicit that tourism companies should rebuild programmes around the gap. If you booked a Cairo day trip from Hurghada, Sharm, or a Nile cruise that lists "GEM" on a Wednesday card, call the operator. The association's letter went to companies, not to individual travellers. Refunds sit with whoever sold you the ticket, not with a central GEM desk.

What the official hours look like the rest of the week

The museum's own ticketing site, tickets.gem.eg, which is where visit-gem.com now redirects, still publishes the normal timetable. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday the complex opens 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the galleries 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Wednesday are the late days: complex 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., galleries 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Last entry is one hour before galleries close. Wednesday 2 September is the exception to that late-night pattern.

Khaleej Times also flagged a notice on a third-party ticket site repeating the same date. Do not buy GEM tickets for 2 September from anyone. The official site is the only channel the museum accepts. Tickets are non-refundable after purchase except in force majeure as GEM defines it. If you already hold a timed ticket for that Wednesday, wait for the authority's follow-up rather than assuming an automatic shift to Thursday.

How to rebuild a Giza day around the closure

Shift GEM to Tuesday 1 September or Thursday 3 September. Tuesday is a standard 6 p.m. gallery close. Thursday is the same. If you wanted the late opening, the next late night after the closure is Saturday 5 September. Combine the pyramids in the morning and GEM in the afternoon on an open day. Do not try to do both after 3 p.m. on a 6 p.m. close. Last entry at 5 p.m. is tight if you are still in the desert photo queue.

The museum opened to the public in November 2025 after a 1 November inauguration. It holds the full Tutankhamun collection in one place for the first time since 1922, plus 12 main galleries from prehistory through the Roman period. That density is why operators default to it on every Cairo excursion. A one-day close sounds small until you realise most Red Sea packages only give guests one Cairo day.

Ghoneim has not said whether the close is for a private event, conservation work, or a state visit. Until that statement lands, treat the date as a hard close. Do not count on a partial opening of the gardens or the commercial area. The ETAA wording is "closed to visitors."

If you are staying in Giza rather than passing through, use the Wednesday for the plateau, the Sphinx viewing terraces, and Saqqara if you have a car. Save GEM for a day when the timed ticket system is live. Book on tickets.gem.eg, not on a hotel desk printout that still shows the old Wednesday late opening.
